Bhubaneswar: Former Member of Parliament and wife of former Chief Minister of Odisha, Late Janaki Ballabh Patnaik, Jayanti Patnaik passed away here on Wednesday night at the age of 90 years.
Patnaik fell unconscious and was rushed to a private hospital here, where she was declared dead.
Born in 1932, she was elected to the Lok Sabha, twice – in 1985 from Cuttack and in 1998 from Berhampur. She was also elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1996.
Jayanti Patnaik was the first Chairperson of the National Women’s Commission. She was also the president of the All India Mahila Congress. Apart from being an active politician, and a women’s leader, Patnaik was also a noted litterateur.
