Special Category Status for Odisha: In a powerful and impassioned speech in Parliament, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MP Dr. Sasmit Patra on Monday reiterated Odisha’s long-pending demand for Special Category Status, asserting that the state has shouldered an outsized burden in both nation-building and disaster resilience.
Addressing the House, Dr. Patra emphasized that Odisha is not seeking sympathy but justice, calling for recognition of the state’s contributions and challenges.
“Odisha is the pillar of India’s growth and the shield against nature’s wrath. Our coal powers industries, our minerals build India’s infrastructure, our ports connect India to the world. Yet, we bear the brunt of nature’s fury alone—storm after storm, year after year.”
Citing Odisha’s frequent devastation by natural calamities—including the Supercyclone, Phailin, Fani, Amphan, and Yaas—Dr. Patra questioned whether this aligns with India’s federal vision.
He highlighted the economic strain Odisha faces due to the dual responsibility of rebuilding after recurring disasters while contributing significantly to the national exchequer.
“No other state is asked to sacrifice as much, contribute as much, and yet receive as little national assistance. This is a national test of fairness,” he declared.
Dr. Patra urged the Union Government to take immediate action, stating that the time for “sympathetic words is over” and the moment for “decisive action” has come.
With a final, resounding appeal, he demanded:
“Grant Special Category Status to Odisha. Not tomorrow. Today.”
Concluding his address with “Bande Utkala Janani, Jai Odisha, Jai Hind,” Dr. Patra made it clear that Odisha’s demand for justice would not be silenced any longer.
