France will step up its diplomatic efforts to halt Turkey’s operation against Kurdish forces in northeastern Syria, the French president’s press office said in a statement on Monday.
The communique came after French President Emanuel Macron met with his Council of Defense and National Security on Sunday night. This followed a meeting between Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel earlier that day, during which both leaders strongly condemned the Turkish offensive.
“France will intensify its diplomatic efforts in close cooperation with its partners from the coalition against Daesh [IS, terrorist organization banned in Russia], within the framework of the European Union, NATO and the UN Security Council to ensure that Turkey immediately stop its ongoing operation.” the statement published by the Elysee Palace read.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday announced the start of Operation Peace Spring, which is targeting the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, an organization banned in Turkey. Syrian authorities have repeatedly condemned the Turkish incursion, while Russia has stated that Turkey needs to avoid actions that could stand in the way of resolving the Syrian conflict. (UNI)
