DAC approves construction of 6 submarines for navy, 5000 MAGM for army

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) headed by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday accorded approval for indigenous construction of six submarines for the navy under Project 75 (I) at a cost of over Rs 40,000 crore.

“This is the second project under the ministry of defence’s ambitious strategic partnership model that aims at providing significant fillip to the government’s ‘Make-in-India’ program,” a defence official said.

For Army, the council has also approved acquisition of approximately 5,000 Milan Anti Guided Missiles (MAGM).

Earlier in August last year, the DAC had given approval for production of 111 naval utility helicopters under strategic partnership model.

Construction of six submarines under Project 75 (I) will provide a major boost to the existing submarine design and manufacturing eco-system in the country through transfer of design and equipment of technology as well as necessary skill sets.
