Just two days after the publication of final National Register of Citizens (NRC), Assam government has announced that foreigners’ tribunal will be set up in all 33 districts of the state.
The state government also said that it will constitute 400 more foreigners’ tribunal by the end of the year.
Notably, around 19 lakh people were excluded from the list of final NRC.
Those whose names did not figure in the final NRC can appeal before a foreigners’ tribunal, which are the designated bodies to adjudicate on whether someone is an illegal immigrant or a genuine citizen.
Currently, there are 100 foreigners’ tribunals spread across 26 districts.
Among these 56 have been assigned as centres for submission of NRC appeals.
The union home ministry had earlier extended the time frame of filing appeals from 60 days to 120 days of the publication of the final NRC. (UNI)
