It was a special moment for retired nurse Rajamma Vavathil, who held Rahul Gandhi as a newborn 49 years ago, when the Congress president met and hugged her on Sunday. Gandhi hugged the 72-year-old lady and held her hands, as she excitedly spoke about his birth in a New Delhi hospital.
The Congress president was on a three-day thanksgiving visit to Wayanad, from he was elected to Lok Sabha with a huge margin of 4.31 lakh votes.
Rajamma was a trainee nurse at Delhi’s Holy Family hospital, when Gandhi was born on June 19, 1970. She was one of the first nurses who attended the new-born Rahul and his mother Sonia.
Rajamma later joined the Army as a nurse and is now settled in Wayanad’s Sulthan Bethery after taking voluntary retirement.
Gandhi’s Wayanad office has shared the moment of meeting with pictures and tweeted, “As Congress president Raul Gandhi’s third day begins, he shares a light moment with Rajamma, a retired nurse present at the time of his birth.”
Earlier, Rajamma, along with her husband and grandchildren, had met Gandhi at the guest house and gifted him sweets and jack fruit chips, made by her.
On Sunday, Gandhi concluded his Wayanad trip with a roadshow. (UNI)
