Tripura govt constitutes high power committee to reinvestigate unsolved cases

Tripura government has constituted a high power committee to explore the feasibility of reopening very old unresolved murder cases, which includes the gruesome murder of BJP leader and candidate for by-election to Krishnanagar assembly constituency of the city Shyamhari Sharma in 1991, informed Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb in the assembly.

He said, the unresolved but sensational cases needed to be resolved and that is why a committee has been formed to study the cases and explore the feasibility of reopening them. “During my visit to Sabroom recently I have received complaint from people regarding six murder cases in the subdivision that had remained unresolved and the victim’s families have been seeking justice.” He also referred to the murder of former Gram Pradhan Atish Chowdhury on April 7, 1993 and said his killers escaped punishment due to poor investigation and non-submission of charge-sheet in the case.

In another case, senior Tripura civil service officer Sukhram Debbarma was shot dead along with his body guard while leaving office on the evening of February 2000 in the heart of the city. Former Congress MLA Madhusudhan Saha was shot dead on February 2001 in Shibnagar area of Agartala but nobody was punished. His family members remained in the dark about his murderers. After the new government came to power, the matter was brought to the chief minister’s notice.

Mr Deb said it was really astonishing how the criminals went scot-free and questioned the role of the then government. Replying to a separate question about BJP MLA Sudhangshu Das, the Chief Minister stated that first and the last cases had been handed over to CBI for investigation but no charge-sheet was filed.

He stated that the state government will sell the properties of NBFCs and chit funds after the disposal of cases against them and distribute the money among investors who had been deceived by the companies. The CBI has already submitted the charge sheets of five cases out of 83 cases and the rest 78 cases were being investigated by the State Investigation Team (SIT). (UNI)
