Uneasy calm prevailed even as life remained crippled in Kashmir valley for the 28th consecutive day on Sunday due to a strike against scrapping of Article 370 and 35A and bifurcation of the state into two Union territories. The famous Sunday market in the summer capital Srinagar remained closed for the fourth successive week.
“There are no restrictions in any part of Kashmir valley, including Srinagar on Sunday”, official sources said adding situation remained by and large peaceful during the night in the valley. Shops and business establishments remained closed and public transport was off the roads in the city and outskirts. However a good number of private vehicles, particularly two-wheelers were plying normally. A good number of roadside vendors, selling fruits and vegetables, could be seen in some areas in civil lines. Similar kind of situation was reported from uptown.
Business and other activities remained paralysed since Aug 5 in the downtown and Shehar-e-khas (SEK), where restrictions under section 144 CRPC, prohibiting the assembly of four or more people in an area remained imposed in some areas. Reports of shutdown were also received from other major towns and Tehsil headquarters in north, south and central Kashmir districts. Minor incidents of stone pelting were reported from a some parts of the region.(UNI)
