A Bill providing for death penalty for child rapists was on Tuesday moved in the Rajya Sabha. The Protection of Children from Sexual offenses (Amendment) Bill 2019, that provides for stringent punishment, including death penalty for those involved in sexual crimes against minors, was moved for consideration of the house by Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani.
Speaking on the Bill, Irani said the Bill seeks to expand the definition of child pornography to visual depiction of sexually explicit . ‘’It also provides for death penalty for child rapists,’’she said. The Bill provides for stringent punishment, including life imprisonment for using children for pornographic purposes. She said that the law was aimed at acting as a deterrent to offences of child sexual abuse due to strong penal provisions in the act.
It intends to protect the interests of vulnerable children in times of distress and ensure their safety and dignity,’ she said.
The Bill has already been passed by the Lok Sabha. The discussion on the Bill in the Rajya Sabha will be held later.
