CM flags off awareness rally on Plastic ban

Chief Minister V Narayanasamy along with Welfare Minister M Kandasamy flagged off a awareness rally on plastic ban from the Legislative Assembly premises here on Friday. Students and youths carrying placards will go round the town and culminate on the beach road .

It may be noted that the government is imposing a ban on plastic less than 50 microns in the Union territory with effect from today. Items such as Polythene/plastic /polypropylene carry bags, Polythene/plastic/Styrofoam(Thermocol) plates, cups, water pouches, plastic straw and plastic flag should not be manufactured, supplied, sold, stocked, distributed, used and transported in the UT.

Plastic sheets used for industrial packing, for packing of pulses, cereals, medicines and milk, multi-layered packing material, plastic bags of more than 40x 50CMs in size used for collection and disposal of solid and Biomedical waste, and plastic bags and sheets used in Horticulture nurseries are exempted from this ban.

Mr Narayansamy said that a fine ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 1 lakh would be imposed on the violators. (UNI)
