Congress President Rahul Gandhi today filed his nomination for Lok Sabha polls from Kerala’s Wayanad.
Gandhi and Priyanka, who arrived at the SKMJ school ground in Kalpetta by a helicopter at 1055 hrs from Kozhikode today, travelled in an open jeep to make it to the collectorate, some 400 meters away from the helipad.
Thousands of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) workers, who thronged alongside the highway, greeted the Gandhi duos by shouting slogans.
Mr Gandhi and Ms Vadra in return waved to the supporters.
The unprecedented turnout of the UDF supporters, all along the wayside, despite security barricades, had created road blocks making the convoy of Mr Gandhi move very slowly to the Collectorate by taking almost 15 minutes.
Perhaps for the first time ever Kerala has witnessed such a huge and overwhelming crowd of supporters of any political party during the filing of nomination by a candidate.
The arrival of Mr Gandhi and Ms Vadra was seen as a historic moment for the people of the hilly district of Wayanad.
Soon after Mr Gandhi came out of the collectorate after filing nominationhis papers, Mr Gandhi and Ms Vadra participated in a road show organised by the UDF in the Kalpetta town for about 15 minutes.
The AICC general secretaries and leaders of the UDF accompanied Mr Gandhi in the open jeep.
Thousands of Congress workers from in and the district took part in the road show. A jubilant and euphoric Congress workers voiced their hopes that Mr Gandhi would win from the constituency with a record margin of five lakh votes.
Mr Gandhi is contesting from Wayanad Lok Sabha Constituency in addition to the Amethi Constituency in Uttar Pradesh that has voted him to Lok Sabha since 2004. (UNI)
