In a gruesome and pre-election violent incident in Odisha former chairman of Anandpur block Ram Chandra Behera, likely to contest Ghasipura Assembly seat in Keonjhar district, was brutally murdered late last night.
Police sources said some unidentified people arrived at Behera’s residence at Dhakotha village last night and they dragged and attacked him with sharp weapon as he came out from his house.
On hearing his screaming, the family members rushed to the spot to rescue him from the criminals who fled from the scene with Behera’s severed hand.
Behera was rushed to the sub-divisional hospital in Anandpur from where he was referred to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack but he succumbed to the injuries on way to the hospital.
The angry residents today staged a road blockade on NH-20 demanding stern action against the culprits.
Police said so far, four people have been arrested in connection with the brutal murder and two of them have confessed to the crime.
The police have formed teams and is continuing their raids at various places to nab the other accused involved in the murder.
Behera had unsuccessfully contested the Ghasipura assembly seat in the past as an independent candidate. (UNI)
