Fresh clashes in industrial Barrackpore region between TMC and BJP leave 20 injured

Barrackpore, Sep 2 (UNI) Fresh clashes in industrial Barrackpore the region between the BJP and TMC left some 20 people injured today as the saffron camp- sponsored 12-hour shutdown to protest the alleged attack on BJP MP Arjun Singh crippled parts of North 24 Parganas with band protagonists blocking  Sealdah- bound Eastern Railway’s train services.

West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar this morning visited the hospital in Kolkata where the BJP MP has been undergoing treatment since Sunday and said the violence must be shunned. He said he would talk to the concerned people regarding violence. Titagarh police station IC Suvrajit Majumder was also wounded today when a brick hit him while he was mediating the warring groups at Nona-Chandanpukur in the industrial area, official sources said.

He was taken to a nearby hospital. Another 20 other people were also admitted with various degrees of injuries following clashes between the BJP and TMC. Fresh clashes flared up this morning when a group of bikers opposing the BJP sponsored 12-hour strike in industrial Barrackpore region demanded reopening the shops and markets. The TMC opposed to the bandh. The bandh virtually shut all the markets and shops and jute mills in the region. The train services in the area and ferry services between Naihati in North 24 Pargans and Chinsurah in the Hooghly district also suspended.

Reinforcement and combat police forces have been deployed as the BJP activists forcing the markets shut and protesting in front of all the SP offices across the state. Five more RAF companies have been deployed. BJP leader Sayantan Basu condemned the attack on BJP MP Arjun Singh, accusing the ruling party and said the TMC feared defeat in 2021 poll and resorted to violence.
