New Delhi, Nov 9 (UNI) A day after the Centre stripped Special Protection Group (SPG) cover provided to the Gandhi-Nehru family, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday wrote to the director of elite protection group expressing her gratitude for looking after their security with such dedication, discretion and personal care.

Addressing Arun Kumar Sinha, the Director of SPG,  Gandhi wrote that “ever since our security was put in the hands of the SPG, my family and I have felt a great sense of reassurance and confidence that we are in the best possible hands.’

“Every day, for the last 28 years, we have experienced the unfailing high professionalism, dedication to duty and sincerity with which the SPG protect us”, the Congress interim president mentioned.

She also said that the SPG is an outstanding force, its members imbued with courage and patriotism in every task they are given.

“On behalf of my whole family, I would like to express our deep appreciation and gratitude to the SPG for looking after our security and well being with such dedication, discretion and personal care. With good wishes to all”, she added.

On Friday, the Narendra Modi government had removed the SPG security for the members of the Congress’s first family- Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

The family is now getting Z+ security cover by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

On Friday,  Gandhi had also thanked the elite protection group, and said ‘it has been a privilege’, to be protected by the SPG.

“A big thank you to all my brothers and sisters in the SPG who worked tirelessly to protect me and my family over the years. Thank you for your dedication, your constant support and for a journey filled with affection and learning. It has been a privilege. All the best for a great future”,  Gandhi tweeted.

The members of the Gandhi family was entitled to get SPG cover as immediate relatives of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated by LTTE, a terror group from Sri Lanka.

The Congress had hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for the withdrawal of the SPG protection for the Gandhi family and alleged that it was their personal revenge and political vendetta behind the move.
