New Delhi: The nationwide bandh called by farmer unions on Tuesday to oppose Centre’s farm was peaceful.
The impact of the bandh was maximum in the north Indian states of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh apart from the national capital region of Delhi.
While vehicular movements were paralysed, shops and commercial establishments kept their shutters down.
The agitating farmers blocked railway tracks at several places in West Bengal, Bihar and Odisha.
A day before the government’s crucial sixth round of talks with representatives of the protesting farmers, Home Minister Amit Shah met 13 leaders of the farmers’ unions in an attempt to break the deadlock.
The leaders included Hannan Mollah of the All India Kisan Sabha and Rakesh Tikait of the Bharatiya Kisan Union. The meeting began around 8 pm on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Opposition political parties have announced a meeting with President Ramnath Kovind on Wednesday at 5 pm.
A delegation of five members that would include Rahul Gandhi and Sharad Pawar is scheduled to meet the President.
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has congratulated the farmers. The unity showcased by the farmers through the Bharat Bandh has underscored the need to repeal the farm laws, he stated.
