ISRO Launches SpaDeX to Demonstrate Spacecraft Docking

ISRO Launches SpaDeX

ISRO Launches SpaDeX: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) aboard a PSLV rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on Monday.

SpaDeX is a cost-effective technology demonstrator designed to showcase in-space docking capabilities using two small spacecraft. According to ISRO, the mission’s primary goal is to develop and validate technologies for rendezvous, docking, and undocking of two spacecraft — SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target) — in a low-Earth circular orbit.

“Due to its compact size and mass, SpaDeX presents unique challenges, requiring finer precision for rendezvous and docking maneuvers compared to larger spacecraft. This mission serves as a precursor for autonomous docking systems crucial for future lunar missions, such as Chandrayaan-4, without relying on Earth-based GNSS support,” ISRO stated.

Mission Objectives

The mission’s primary goal is to develop and demonstrate critical technologies for the rendezvous, docking, and undocking of two small spacecraft in low-Earth orbit. It involves two spacecraft:

  • SDX01: Serving as the Chaser spacecraft.
  • SDX02: Functioning as the Target spacecraft.

Additionally, both spacecraft are equipped with a differential GNSS-based Satellite Positioning System (SPS), enabling precise Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) solutions. This ensures accurate control and coordination during orbital maneuvers.

  1. Electric Power Transfer
Demonstrating the transfer of electrical power between docked spacecraft, a critical capability for future in-space applications such as robotic systems.
  2. Composite Spacecraft Control
Managing and coordinating multiple spacecraft in orbit to perform as a unified system.
  3. Post-Undocking Payload Operations
Evaluating the functionality and performance of payloads after the spacecraft have separated, ensuring their continued effectiveness.

Importance of the SpaDeX Mission

The SpaDeX mission marks a pivotal milestone in advancing India’s spacecraft docking technology, a critical capability for future endeavors such as satellite servicing, space station assembly, and deep space exploration. By demonstrating in-orbit docking and undocking, ISRO is laying the groundwork for executing more sophisticated and complex missions in the years to come.

Additionally, this mission underscores India’s growing expertise in small satellite technologies and its commitment to innovation in space exploration. It reinforces ISRO’s position as a leading player in the global space community, showcasing its ability to contribute significantly to cutting-edge advancements in space science and technology.
